At the drugstore there is an entire shelf full of capsules promising thicker hair. The idea behind it sounds plausible: hair needs nutrients, so more of them helps. Unfortunately, it is not that simple. Nutrients can only slow hair loss if your body actually has too little of them. If there is no deficiency, a supplement taken on a hunch usually does nothing, and with some nutrients, too much can even be harmful.
That does not mean diet is irrelevant. A genuine deficiency in iron, zinc or vitamin D can encourage a particular form of hair loss. The sensible approach, however, is not a scattergun one but the question: are you actually lacking something? When nutrients really matter
A pronounced nutrient deficiency can encourage hair loss, usually in the form of telogen effluvium. Here a stressor pushes many hairs into the resting phase at the same time, and a few weeks later the hair thins diffusely across the whole head, without bald patches.1 You can read more about this form under Hair loss caused by stress.
What matters is the difference between a deficiency and a normal supply. If you have too little of an important nutrient, you can benefit from targeted correction. If you are well supplied, there is no additional benefit for your hair. A supplement does not lift a normal level into a better range; it only fills a gap if there is one.
That is why diet comes before pills. For most people, a balanced diet with enough protein, fruit, vegetables and whole grains covers the needs of the hair roots.2 A supplement does not replace a balanced diet, and it also does not make up for a deficiency that does not exist.

Iron and ferritin: the most common starting point
Iron deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency worldwide and the most important point when it comes to hair loss.3 Women are affected above all: through the regular blood loss of menstruation, through pregnancy and with a vegetarian or vegan diet, because the body absorbs plant-based iron less well. The most important lab value here is not the iron in the blood itself, but ferritin. Ferritin is the storage value for iron and shows how well the reserves are filled. A low ferritin level has long been associated with diffuse hair loss. The research, however, is not consistent, and not every low value automatically explains the hair loss.3 That is precisely why an abnormal ferritin value belongs in the hands of a doctor for assessment, rather than being treated on your own.
Vitamin D, zinc and other nutrients
Besides iron, other nutrients are discussed in connection with hair loss. For most of them the same basic principle applies: relevant when a deficiency has been confirmed, no proven benefit without a deficiency.3
- Vitamin D: The evidence is weaker and contradictory. Low vitamin D levels are being studied in connection with hair loss, but vitamin D is not a proven hair-growth remedy. If a deficiency has been confirmed, correcting it is worthwhile anyway.
- Zinc: A pronounced zinc deficiency, for example with absorption disorders or a very one-sided diet, can encourage hair loss. But it is rare, and routine zinc screening for hair loss is not supported by evidence. Too much zinc is also harmful, so the rule is: only correct it when a deficiency has been confirmed.
- Vitamin B12 and folic acid: A deficiency occurs mainly with a purely plant-based diet. For everyday hair loss, the evidence is not sufficient to test or supplement for it routinely; it becomes relevant when a deficiency is actually present.
The pattern repeats itself: none of these individual nutrients is a growth agent for healthy hair. They are building blocks that can be missing, and when they are, it is worth closing the gap in a targeted way.
The biotin myth
Hardly any nutrient is marketed as heavily for beautiful hair as biotin (vitamin B7). With a balanced diet, however, a genuine biotin deficiency is very rare; a severe deficiency in healthy people on a normal diet is practically never described. Without a deficiency, larger studies have not shown any benefit of biotin supplements against hair loss.3
There is, however, a solid reason to take high-dose biotin seriously. Many hair supplements contain biotin in a very high dose, and that can distort lab values. Thyroid and hormone values are among those affected.3 The heart-attack marker troponin can also be distorted, where biotin can cause a falsely low result. This is medically delicate, because in an emergency a heart attack could be missed as a result.4
Check your blood values or supplement on a hunch?
With diffuse or unclear hair loss, a targeted blood test does more than guessing with capsules. Depending on the situation, values worth checking include ferritin for the iron stores, the blood count, the thyroid (TSH) and, where appropriate, vitamin D or zinc. Which values matter in an individual case depends on your symptoms and belongs in the hands of a doctor for assessment, rather than being worked through as a blanket list.
The advantage is obvious: a blood test shows whether there is a gap at all. If a value is abnormal, it can be corrected in a targeted and measured way, with a doctor's guidance if in doubt. If everything is within the normal range, you spare yourself supplements that do nothing. These values are usually taken by your GP; that is the normal and correct route when a nutrient deficiency is a possibility.

When vitamins do not help: hereditary hair loss
The most common permanent hair loss is hereditary, known medically as androgenetic alopecia. It follows a pattern: in men a receding hairline and a bald spot at the crown, in women a thinning along the parting. Behind it lies a hereditary sensitivity of the hair roots to a hormone, not a nutrient deficiency.
Vitamins and dietary supplements cannot change that. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment makes clear that there is no increased nutrient requirement for hereditary hair loss and that this form cannot be halted with special supplements.2 If you want to achieve something here, you need a different, medically reviewed treatment.
