How does minoxidil work?

Minoxidil acts directly at the hair root and extends the growth phase of the hair, so that resting follicles can move back into the active phase. The exact mechanism of action has not been fully clarified; improved blood flow to the scalp is also discussed as a contributing factor.

Minoxidil can be applied topically as a spray on the scalp or taken orally. The oral form is not approved for this purpose in Germany and is off-label, based on a doctor's assessment in the individual case.

Minoxidil is often combined with finasteride because the two active ingredients work at different points. Here too, the effect only becomes apparent after months and only as long as use is continued. Which form makes sense for you is decided by the doctor.
