Is dutasteride stronger than finasteride?

For hair loss, dutasteride is not approved in Germany and is only prescribed off-label; the approved option for men is finasteride. At the hormonal level, dutasteride has been shown to lower DHT levels more strongly, because it inhibits both types of 5-alpha-reductase, whereas finasteride mainly inhibits one. Whether this translates into more hair is less clear, and the more extensive long-term data are available for finasteride. The choice is made by the doctor.
